Beach, ND

Beach is the Golden Valley County seat in western North Dakota, close to the Montana line and the long U.S. 10 and Interstate 94 corridor. The city is named for Captain Warren C. Beach, who accompanied a railroad survey expedition through the region in 1873. Settlement accelerated after the land survey around 1901, the post office opened in 1902, Beach became a village in 1907, and incorporation as a city followed in 1909. When Golden Valley County was organized in 1912, Beach kept the county seat.

The first decades brought a grocery, hotel, churches, schools, electric lights, telephones, and a long row of grain elevators. From 1905 to 1915, Beach was known as one of the largest primary grain markets in the country, a prairie boom that eventually settled into a slower county-seat rhythm. Today the Golden Valley County Museum holds artifacts, photographs, equipment, and family stories from the area's early days. Prairie Fire Pottery adds handmade work to the downtown map, while Gazebo Park, local storefronts, the county fair, city offices, and nearby Badlands trips give residents and road travelers reasons to stop. Beach is a borderland service town with a railroad beginning and a museum full of prairie memory.
