About Bear Creek Village

Bear Creek Village is a Luzerne County borough whose history is written into the Bear Creek Village Historic District. Settled in the 1770s, it moved through a lumber-company phase, an ice-industry phase, and a later summer-resort chapter before becoming a year-round residential village. Albert Lewis, known locally as the county’s “Lumber and Ice King,” built the operations that left workers’ cottages, outbuildings, churches, a dam, lake, and other structures in the historic landscape. The district was added to the National Register in 1999, and the borough is in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. The local shorthand is timber, ice, lake, and preserved village history.
