Beckville, TX

Beckville is a city in Panola County, Texas, at the junction of State Highway 149, Farm roads 124 and 959, northwest of Carthage. It began a mile east of its present site, named for Matthew W. Beck, who settled in the area around 1850. A post office opened in 1857, and by 1885 the older community had churches, gristmills, stores, a hotel, and a blacksmith. In 1886, the Texas, Sabine Valley and Northwestern Railway bypassed the first townsite after landowners asked high prices; Joe Biggs sold land along the route and laid out a new town. Most businesses moved to the railroad, leaving Old Beckville behind.

The railroad turn is the heart of Beckville's story. The first school followed in 1889, and by 1897 the town had a three-teacher school with 151 students. Beckville incorporated by 1929, then faced a 1917 business district fire, drought, and the Great Depression. The city formed around the track and the road junction, a layout still visible in the highway grid and the way old and new townsites sit a mile apart. Beckville is a place where the railroad did more than bring traffic: it moved the town itself.
