About Beech Mountain

Beech Mountain is an incorporated town spread across Avery and Watauga counties at 5,506 feet, the highest incorporated community east of the Mississippi River. The 2020 census counted 675 residents. That elevation shapes the local economy and the calendar: the ski resort brings winter visitors, summer mountain trails bring a second busy season, and peak ski season can bring crowds of about 10,000. Beech Mountain's roads climb to a place that functions more like a resort town than a conventional lowland county center. Outdoor infrastructure is woven into the town itself.

Beech Mountain has more than 26 miles of hiking and mountain-bike trails, a 43-acre recreation park, the Emerald Outback trail system, and a free youth sledding hill beside Town Hall. The resort shifts from skiing to mountain biking as seasons change, while shops, restaurants, and the brewery at the slope base give the mountain a small commercial cluster. Beech Mountain is a year-round mountain recreation town, with the ski hill and trail network setting the rhythm.
