Beemer, NE

Beemer is a Cuming County village built where Rock Creek meets the Elkhorn River bottoms, nine miles northwest of West Point. A. D. Beemer started a sawmill there in 1885, then persuaded the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad to run through his land. The settlement was first called Rock Creek; the depot and post office used Beemer, and the newer name won out. Rail access turned the village into a shipping point for area livestock farmers, with stockyards, a brickyard, plow factory, canning factory, banks, and 34 merchants appearing during its early growth.

Beemer counted 611 people in 2020. The school building that once served local children is now village-owned: Beemer Elementary closed in 2017 after the local schools merged with West Point, and students moved into the West Point-Beemer system. Beemer's current classrooms sit seven to ten miles away in West Point, leaving the village's river-bottom setting, rail corridor, historic main street, and old school building as visible links to its earlier growth. On the map, Beemer remains a highway village whose original rail logic is easy to see.
