Belfield, ND

Belfield sits at the junction of Interstate 94 and U.S. 85 in western North Dakota, fifteen minutes from the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The city was founded in 1883, the same year a tornado tore through the young settlement, and its history has continued through cycles of ranching, rail traffic, oil development, and bust. The Badlands begin close by, but Belfield is also a working service center for the farms, wells, trucks, and highways that cross this part of Stark County.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park gives Belfield an outward-facing role, bringing visitors through town on their way to the Little Missouri badlands and Roosevelt's western landscape. Oil activity adds another layer, with energy work and related services changing the local economy when drilling expands. Schools, businesses, churches, and city services keep the town grounded between those larger forces. Belfield's character comes from that overlap: a small North Dakota city where park traffic, prairie work, and the boom-and-bust rhythm of oil share the same roads.
