Bell Gardens, CA

Bell Gardens carries a fragment of the Rancho San Antonio era in the middle of a compact southeast Los Angeles County city. The state landmark at 7000 Gage Avenue contains portions of an adobe that Francisco Salvador Lugo and his son Antonio María Lugo completed by 1810. Henry Tifft Gage acquired the property in 1880 and lived there from 1883 to 1924, including his 1899–1903 term as California governor. The city’s name also preserves its agricultural transition: Japanese immigrants leased local ground for vegetable and rice production, and farming remained prominent into the 1930s. Defense plants and inexpensive homebuilding then accelerated settlement before Bell Gardens incorporated on August 1, 1961. The surviving house, now known as the Henry Gage Mansion, makes that sequence tangible at a civic address still in use.

Bell Gardens’ compact footprint concentrates much of its recreation in a few substantial sites. John Anson Ford Park contains the Bell Gardens Sports Complex, where three synthetic fields, two grass fields, and baseball and softball diamonds support organized leagues. Veterans Park supplies a second center for courts, a skate park, classes, and Ross Hall. The city’s aquatics program operates from the pool on Scout Avenue. Between those destinations, the municipal Town Trolley follows a fixed route Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The base fare is 50 cents, reduced to 25 cents for riders age 55 and older and disabled riders. Its loop gives short local trips a city-run service of their own.

At Veterans Park, the 2026 calendar placed summer concerts and movies, free farmers markets, an Independence Day celebration, and resident art-and-yard sales on the same grounds used for recreation. The Bell Gardens Lions Club’s community fair reached its 65th edition in May 2026, giving the city a long-running gathering beyond the weekly program schedule. On Garfield Avenue, the Bell Gardens Library adds a smaller indoor venue. Library service began locally in 1938, and the present county-library building opened in 1970; its children’s area, public computers, and homework support extend the city’s shared spaces beyond sports and outdoor events. Veterans Park and the library are useful orientation points because programs return to these familiar addresses throughout the year.

Bell Gardens’ municipal budget is unusually tied to a card room. Parkwest Bicycle Casino generates over $17 million a year for the city—over 40 percent of an approximately $50 million general fund that pays for police, streets, parks, libraries, and recreation. A state attorney-general decision could reduce casino revenue by as much as 30 percent, creating a direct risk to municipal services. Voters approved Measure BG by 2,097 votes to 1,593 in the certified June 2026 result. The measure adds a quarter-percentage-point transactions-and-use tax; its ballot estimate was about $1.2 million in annual revenue. Shopping centers including the Marketplace, Los Jardines, and Village Square add sales-tax receipts, with much of that revenue coming from visitors. Gaming and retail revenue thus connects directly to the fields, programs, library service, and summer evenings used across the city.
