Belle Plaine, IA

Belle Plaine is a Benton County city founded in 1862 when the railroad was expected to reach the site. The tracks did arrive, and rail growth gave the town its early shape along the Lincoln Highway corridor. The Iowa River runs just south of the city airport, adding a second line to the map. Belle Plaine’s older downtown still carries that railroad-era layout, while the city’s 2011 revitalization improved 26 of 50 storefronts through a combined streetscape and façade project rooted in historic preservation.

The city keeps its own public school system, aquatic center, parks, library, grocery stores, restaurants, and service businesses. That mix makes Belle Plaine read as a working Benton County town with a clear civic core: the rail line marks its start, the Iowa River marks its southern edge, and Main Street carries the daily errands. It is part of the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area, but its local story remains about the railroad and the downtown, too.
