Bellingham, WA

Bellingham feels unique because it grew out of four separate coastal settlements stitched together around the bay. You can still spot that working-class heritage in the old brick buildings and along the marine yards. Today, the town leans heavily into the outdoors and arts. Western Washington University injects plenty of cultural momentum into daily life, from campus art galleries and theater productions to community lectures. It keeps the city lively year-round, pairing the relaxed pace of a coastal town with the creative pulse of a college community.

The waterfront has evolved into one of the city's favorite gathering spots. While active boatyards and shipping docks still operate along the bay, the former industrial mill lands are gradually opening up to the community. Waypoint Park and the seasonal Portal container village have turned the shoreline into a lively destination where locals meet for food trucks, craft beer, outdoor movie nights, and bike rides on the seaside pump track. Summer brings a steady calendar of community events, circus performances, and music festivals right by the water, just a short walk from downtown.

To the south, Fairhaven doubles as a cozy neighborhood and a travel hub. You can wander its leafy brick streets to visit neighborhood cafes, then walk down to the terminal to catch an Amtrak train down the coast or board the ferry to Alaska. Right behind the shops, wooded trails wind along Padden Creek into the Chuckanut Community Forest, connecting the neighborhood to miles of hiking and biking routes. It sums up what makes Bellingham so easy to love: you get mountain trails, saltwater access, and great local spots all within walking distance of home.
