Belmont is a Lafayette County village where the Driftless landscape, a territorial-capitol site, and two trailheads meet. The village sits just miles from the original location of Wisconsin’s First Capitol, the 1836 building where the territory’s first legislature met. Belmont Mound State Park adds the everyday geography: walking trails, rock formations, and broad views over the surrounding countryside. The name comes from Belle Monte, French for “beautiful hill,” which fits the local map without much explanation.
