Beloit, OH

Beloit is a Mahoning County village in southwestern Ohio, where the 2020 census counted 903 residents. It began with the railroad in the late 1840s as Smithfield Station, then adopted the name Beloit in 1863. The name came from Beloit, Wisconsin, giving this Ohio village a Midwestern namesake before it had its own long civic history. Beloit sits in the Youngstown–Warren metropolitan area.

Railroad growth shaped the early village, and the West Branch Local School District now ties Beloit to surrounding communities through early learning, intermediate, middle, and high schools. The old station name and the newer school network tell the same practical story: Beloit has always depended on connections beyond its own small street grid. Today it is a compact Mahoning County place where a railroad beginning, a transferred name, and a regional school system still meet. The village’s old rail corridor and school routes still give the place a clear relationship to the surrounding farms and nearby towns.
