Belvidere, IL

Belvidere is the county seat of Boone County, set on the Kishwaukee River in northern Illinois. Early settlers called the riverfront location Elysian Fields, borrowing from Greek mythology, and the river still gives the city its physical center. Belvidere has public art, older neighborhoods, a courthouse-town role, and a manufacturing base shaped in part by its location near Rockford and the I-90 corridor. It feels like a practical northern Illinois city with more civic identity than a standard suburb.
