About Bend

Bend is a Tehama County census-designated place on the east bank of the Sacramento River, about six miles north-northeast of Red Bluff. Its name was shortened from earlier names including Horsethief Bend and Sanders Bend, all referring to the river’s broad meander around the community. A post office operated here from 1897 to 1935. County watershed material describes a long farming and irrigation history, while Bend Bridge and Bend Ferry Road remain the key links over and along the river. Flood concerns are part of the local geography, too: the low ground beside the river and the single bridge connection shape how the community is reached. Bend is a small river settlement whose roads and history all come back to the Sacramento’s bend.
