Benton, KS

Benton is a Butler County city northeast of Wichita, where the old rail line and the school district still give the town its shape. The Missouri Pacific Railroad laid rails through the area in 1883, and Benton was platted the same year. The town’s name honors Thomas Benton Murdock, a Kansas politician. A local church started in a tiny 1875 schoolhouse nicknamed the “pill box,” a detail that tells you how early Benton’s civic life grew out of one-room buildings. That old schoolhouse nickname is still part of Benton’s local vocabulary.

The school map changed in 1961, when Benton schools consolidated into Unified District 375. Benton now has Circle Benton Elementary and Circle Middle School, while Circle High School is in Towanda. K-254 points toward Wichita and the wider Butler County network, but the town still reads as a railroad place that kept its school identity after the tracks stopped defining daily life. The easy local bearings are the old rail corridor, school buildings, and the road northwest toward Wichita.
