Benzonia, MI

Benzonia began in 1858 as a Christian educational colony modeled on Oberlin, Ohio, and for a time the village was Benzie County's seat. Grand Traverse College opened here in 1863, became Benzonia College in 1891, and was reorganized as Benzonia Academy in 1900; the academy closed in 1918. That history still gives the village an institutional center tied to its streets and public buildings. Mills Community House, once part of the academy, keeps the college-era map close to the present village.

Benzonia sits at the southeast end of Crystal Lake, where U.S. 31 meets M-115. Academy Park, its public pavilion, and the seasonal ice rink give the old school site current uses, while village water service, the library, museum, council, and planning commission cover the everyday civic side. The former academy landscape and the highway junction are the useful orientation points for the village, with Crystal Lake and nearby Lake Michigan setting the wider Benzie County frame. Benzonia's local clue is the handoff from school colony to village center, with education history still attached to the places people use now.
