Bergman, AR

Bergman is a Boone County town in Arkansas. The 2020 census counted 426 residents, and the town sits along State Highway 7 northeast of Harrison. Bergman grew from a railroad stop on the White River line of the Iron Mountain Railroad, which later became part of Missouri Pacific. Before the modern road network took over, the rail line gave Bergman a reason to exist and tied the little town to the wider Ozark region. Nearby places once carried names like Oregon Flat, Clabbie, and Keener; their names still give the old map a few extra layers.

Today the Bergman School District and poultry industry are the town's strongest everyday markers. The district serves Bergman and Zinc and keeps the town's high school at the center of local life. The old rail-era map is still there under the newer roads, but Bergman has made its own version of staying put: school, feed mills, churches, and a town name that survived the shift from trains to trucks.
