Berkey, OH

Berkey is a village in Lucas County, west of Toledo and close to the Michigan line. The 2020 census counted 275 residents. It is a small northwest Ohio place surrounded by the flat farm country of the Maumee Valley, with village streets connecting to the roads that lead toward Toledo, Sylvania, and the state line. The village's short profile can make it easy to miss, but its name carries a change from the nineteenth century.

Berkey was first called Riga, and a post office under that name opened in 1837. The name changed to Berkey in 1870, honoring Richard K. Berkeybile, an early postmaster. That postal shift is the clearest thread in the village's history: a settlement on the edge of larger Lucas County that kept a name, a post office, and a local center as the surrounding countryside changed. Berkey is small, but the old Riga name, the Berkey post office story, and the road links to Toledo give it a recognizable place in northwest Ohio.
