Berlin, AL

Berlin is a small Cullman County town at Walker’s Corner, where U.S. 278 meets County Road 747 about five miles east of Cullman. The crossroads gives the place its shape: a community center, homes, churches, and surrounding farms gathered along roads that connect into the larger county. Before it was Berlin, the settlement was called Hobart. Its post office opened in 1895 and closed in 1903, and the name Berlin was adopted in 1914. The town’s modern incorporation came much later, in 2018, so its civic story has several distinct chapters.

Today the Berlin Community Center and the Berlin Farmers Market give residents places to meet, sell produce, and keep local activity visible. Many daily needs lead toward Cullman, but Berlin retains its own small-town routines, from roadside conversations to community events and the practical work of maintaining a rural settlement. The landscape around Walker’s Corner is a mix of pasture, timber, and scattered houses, with the highway bringing through traffic past a place that still functions as a neighborhood center. Berlin’s history is written in its changing name and postal status, but its present character comes from the people who keep this crossroads useful.
