Bernie, MO

Bernie is a small Stoddard County city in the Missouri Bootheel, set along Missouri Route 25 between Dexter and Malden. The town was laid out in 1890, named for Bernice “Bernie” Crumb, and has had a post office since 1889. The St. Louis Southwestern Railway helped set the town’s early direction, moving people and freight through the flat country of southern Missouri. The 2020 census counted 1,859 residents, and the city remains a local stop for the surrounding roads and farm country.

Bernie R-XIII keeps the school footprint local, with an elementary campus on South Spiker and the junior-senior high school on West Main. The Bernie Public Library sits on North Allen Street and links the town to Missouri’s state library network as well as its own local collections. The St. Francis River lies about ten miles west, while Dexter and Malden handle larger errands and regional connections. Bernie’s story is the everyday Bootheel pattern: a rail-founded town whose school, library, post office, and highway keep a small agricultural community connected across the flat southern county.
