Berry, AL

Berry is a Fayette County town between the North River and Cedar Creek, with Alabama State Route 18 running from Fayette to Oakman through the center. Thompson Berry settled here in the 1840s, raising cattle, farming, and eventually operating a gin and gristmill. When the Georgia-Pacific Railroad reached the area in 1882–83, the depot took Berry’s name, and the town grew around the new rail stop.

Berry incorporated in 1882, with town limits measured a mile in each direction from a public well near the depot. The first store and post office operated from a boxcar before the railroad was fully laid, a detail that captures the town’s beginning in one scene. The surrounding roads still point toward Fayette County’s farms and river valleys. Today Berry is also Fayette County’s seat, with schools, shops, restaurants, and small businesses filling in the civic picture. Berry is a west Alabama town whose map still carries the old sequence: river country, landowner, railroad, well, and county government.
