Berthold, ND

Berthold is a Ward County city on North Dakota's prairie, founded in 1900 and organized today around a school, city services, and the open country around it. The Berthold Public School at 401 4th Avenue NE is part of Lewis and Clark Public School District 161, which formed in 2003 when Berthold merged with two neighboring districts. The Berthold Bombers name is part of the town's school-centered map. The prairie continues beyond the last blocks.

Berthold handles police, fire, ambulance, water reporting, zoning, and municipal court through its city government. Outside the city limits, Lake Darling Dam, Tioga Dam, and Lake Sakakawea are within an hour's drive for fishing, hunting, and winter ice-fishing. Those destinations matter because Berthold's setting is prairie first and town grid second: the school and civic offices sit inside a small city, while recreation and working land spread across Ward County.
