Bethania, NC

Bethania was established in 1759 as a Moravian agricultural village, laid out with home lots at the center and orchard, bottomland, and upland fields around them. That plan gave the town houses, trades, church, school, barns, gardens, and working land in one connected pattern. The 500-acre Bethania Historic District is a National Historic Landmark and remains the oldest municipality in Forsyth County, even though the town is now surrounded by Winston-Salem.

Historic Bethania’s visitor center and museum introduce the preserved village, including the 1790s Wolff-Moser House, Alpha Chapel, old stores, private homes, and the Black Walnut Trail. Town Hall handles local government, while Winston-Salem supplies nearby jobs, shopping, health care, and cultural life. The town’s streets still open onto fields and old buildings instead of a conventional suburban pattern. Bethania feels like a working piece of eighteenth-century town planning that has survived inside a modern city’s orbit, with tours, community events, residents, and preservation all sharing the same small landscape.
