About Bethel

Bethel is the largest community in western Alaska, set on the Kuskokwim River about 50 miles from Kuskokwim Bay. It is a regional hub for Yup'ik country, with schools, newspapers, markets, transportation, and services reaching far beyond its population count. The Kuskokwim 300 dogsled race and the Cama-i dance festival give Bethel strong cultural markers. Remote, river-oriented, and deeply regional, it matters much more than its size suggests.
