Bethel, AK

Set along the Kuskokwim River about 400 miles west of Anchorage, Bethel is the primary hub for roughly 50 surrounding villages across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Home to around 6,300 people, the town is completely off the main road system. Everything and everyone arrives by air or seasonal barge, and locals get around by boat, four-wheeler, or snowmachine. The landscape is wide-open tundra with endless skies, offering direct access to hunting, fishing, and berry picking right outside town.

Yup'ik culture shapes everyday life here, and traditional customs remain strong alongside modern services. In the spring, the community comes together for the Cama-i Dance Festival, while January draws mushers from all over for the famous Kuskokwim 300 sled dog race. Relocating to Bethel involves adjusting to remote logistics, subarctic winters, and higher living costs, but residents are supported by a strong regional hospital, several local schools, and a close, welcoming community.
