Bethel, NC

Bethel is a Pitt County town in North Carolina’s Inner Banks and part of the Greenville metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 1,373 residents. U.S. 64, U.S. 13, and North Carolina 11 carry traffic through town, linking Bethel with Greenville, Raleigh, and the smaller communities of eastern Pitt County. The roads still do the work of a crossroads village: they bring school traffic, farm vehicles, local shopping, and longer trips together in one compact place.

Bethel was once known as Brandon, and before the railroad it was a crossroads where roads from Greenville, Halifax, Tarboro, and Williamston met. Bethel Methodist Church supplied the lasting name, a post office opened in 1858, and the town incorporated in 1873. The Seaboard and Raleigh Railroad arrived in late 1882, giving people from Greenville and nearby farms a place to catch the train. Bethel’s present-day identity follows that old sequence—road crossing, church, post office, railroad, then highway town—inside the agricultural landscape of Pitt County.
