About Bethel Park

Bethel Park grew into one of Pittsburgh's early streetcar suburbs after interurban service reached the area in the early 1900s. Settlement began around 1800; Bethel Township was established in 1886, and the borough incorporated in 1949. Now a home-rule municipality about seven miles south of Pittsburgh, it still has a rail connection to the regional core: Pittsburgh Regional Transit lists the Bethel Park Park and Ride on the Silver Line, whose route continues through Station Square and Downtown to the North Shore. For 2020-2024, 76.4 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, the median owner-occupied value was $273,400, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $1,902, and median gross rent was $1,311. Public recreation is distributed among 14 municipal parks, the Montour Trail, and a centrally located community center. Millennium Park's 40 acres contain ball fields, a sports court, a walking trail, and play equipment, while Simmons Park adds pickleball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, batting cages, and another trail.

The 40,596-square-foot Bethel Park Community Center has an indoor walking track, gymnasium, exercise studio, rooms for classes and gatherings, and senior programming; outside are a playground, field, quarter-mile track, pavilion, and an acre-plus splash park. The Montour Trail follows a former railroad right-of-way through Bethel Park and links at its western end with the Great Allegheny Passage. Recreation programming ranges from fitness and sports to youth camps, concerts, star parties, and the September Community Day and Parade. The municipality also operates a Tuesday farmers market from May through September at South Park, then uses the community center for a smaller food-truck and farm-vendor series in fall and early spring.
