Bethpage, NY

Grumman engineers and factory workers in Bethpage built the Apollo lunar modules that carried astronauts from lunar orbit to the Moon's surface. The first flight-ready craft reached Cape Kennedy in June 1967 and flew without a crew on Apollo 5 the following January. Grumman operated in Bethpage from 1936 to 1994, making aerospace work a lasting part of the hamlet's identity even after the plant closed. Another 1930s change supplied the modern name: the post office became Bethpage in 1936, four years after nearby Bethpage State Park opened. The community had 16,658 residents in 2020, and its Long Island Rail Road station remains a direct link to Jamaica and New York City terminals on the Ronkonkoma Branch. Bethpage Community Park concentrates several public facilities along Stewart Avenue. It combines a seasonal pool and children's wading area with tennis, basketball, handball, a playground, and an indoor ice rink that holds public sessions beyond the winter season.

Nearby Bethpage State Park extends the choices well beyond its five golf courses. The grounds include picnic areas, playing fields, tennis, hiking and bicycling routes, bridle paths, and cross-country ski trails; the Black Course hosted the Ryder Cup in 2025 after earlier U.S. Open and PGA Championship events. The Bethpage Public Library serves the school-district community with storytimes, book groups, exercise and technology programs, public computers, Wi-Fi, study rooms, museum passes, and equipment ranging from board games to lawn games. Together, the station, town park, state park, and library give daily life several public gathering places within a hamlet otherwise shaped by residential streets and the memory of a very large industrial campus.
