Biddeford, ME

The falls of the Saco River powered Biddeford's growth from an early settlement into a major textile center, and the mills still shape the city's downtown. Native communities used the river for fishing and transportation before European settlement; by the mid-1800s, textile production drew workers from Canada and Europe and expanded the commercial district around the factories. Converted mill buildings now contain apartments and businesses. The RiverWalk overlooks the falls and links the Pepperell Mill campus, Saco Island, and the rail station by pedestrian bridge. Biddeford counted 22,552 residents in 2020; the July 2025 estimate was 22,399. Housing estimates for 2020-2024 put owner occupancy at 48.1 percent, the median owner-occupied value at $396,600, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage at $1,948, and median gross rent at $1,292. community activity extends from the dense downtown to the Atlantic shoreline. McArthur Library, founded in 1863, hosts exhibits, concerts, lectures, and children's programs.

The 500-seat City Theater opened in 1896 inside City Hall and continues to present community theater, concerts, films, dance, and visiting performers. Biddeford ArtWalk takes place on the third Friday from May through October; the city also lists WinterFest and River Jam as annual gatherings. Farther from Main Street are three ocean beaches: Fortunes Rocks, Middle Beach, and Biddeford Pool. Seasonal parking permits apply from June 15 through Labor Day, and Biddeford Pool has mobility mats, a beach wheelchair, bathhouse, showers, and seasonal lifeguards. Clifford Park's more than 240 acres combine wooded trails with courts, playgrounds, a skate area, and picnic space. At 72-acre Rotary Park, residents have trails, sports fields, a dog park, community garden, boat launch, sledding hills, disc golf, and a seasonally guarded Saco River swimming beach.
