Big Pine Key is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on an island of the same name in Monroe County, Florida. Situated twenty-nine miles northeast of Key West along U.S. Route 1, the community of approximately 4,300 is best known as the home of the National Key Deer Refuge. The island features local shopping centers, public beaches, and is served by the Monroe County School District.
