About Big Point
Big Point is a census-designated place in Jackson County within the Pascagoula metropolitan area, and its geography is easiest to read along Mississippi Highway 613. The road runs north about five miles to Hurley and southwest about nine miles to Escatawpa, while Pascagoula, the county seat, lies about 18 miles south. Those connections place Big Point between inland Jackson County communities and the Gulf Coast city. The highway also places the community in the corridor between the coast and inland neighborhoods today.
A post office operated here under the name Bigpoint from 1894 to 1942, giving the community a postal history that predates its current census designation. Today the Jackson County School District serves the area and includes two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. For a newcomer, Big Point’s practical map runs along the highway: north to Hurley, south toward Pascagoula, and southwest to Escatawpa, with county schools and regional services woven through the surrounding roads.
