Big Spring got its name from an actual freshwater spring tucked between the rocky hills, which served as a crucial watering hole for Comanche travelers, cattle drivers, and early settlers. Today, that historic spring is preserved inside Comanche Trail Park, while the bluff above is home to Big Spring State Park on Scenic Mountain. Driving up the winding limestone road built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s gives you a fantastic view of the entire area, from the downtown street grid to the endless West Texas plains.

When it comes to recreation, Comanche Trail Park serves as the main gathering spot, offering walking paths, a municipal golf course, and the popular annual Festival of Lights. Downtown features the beautifully restored 1930s Hotel Settles along with small museums and classic architecture.
