Big Water, UT

Big Water is a Kane County town on U.S. 89, about 17 miles northwest of Page, Arizona, near Lake Powell and Glen Canyon Dam. The settlement began as Glen Canyon City in the 1950s, when workers came to the region for dam construction. After the project, the community kept its place on the map as a gateway between southern Utah’s red-rock country, the lake, and the Arizona border. Sandstone mesas, dry washes, and broad desert light define the approach.

Today the town sits close to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, with lodging, camping, guided trips, and boat access organized around the Lake Powell region. Page supplies larger shopping, medical care, schools, and employment connections, while Big Water’s own roads serve homes, visitor businesses, and county facilities. The community has also carried a complicated social history, including the Joseph clan’s polygamous settlement in the 1980s; that episode is part of the record without standing in for the town as a whole. Big Water is a desert gateway shaped by a dam project, a reservoir, and the canyon country around them.
