Bird Island, MN

Bird Island is a small Renville County city on U.S. 212, set among the broad fields and shelterbelts of southern Minnesota. The town was platted in 1878 and incorporated in 1881 as a railway village. Its name came from a nearby marsh and bird sanctuary, but drainage ditches and tile later converted much of that wet ground to farmland. The change is a useful key to the town: water and agriculture are both part of its history, even when the old landscape is easiest to find in local memory.

Today, Bird Island serves as a farm-country meeting place with a main street, city services, small businesses, churches, and a cultural center that keeps arts programming in the local calendar. The Renville County Fair arrives every August, bringing the county's people together for livestock, exhibits, food, and the familiar sounds of a late-summer gathering. Highway 212 gives the city a direct regional connection, but the place remains centered on neighbors, fields, and recurring events. Bird Island's scale is small; its role is broad enough to include the surrounding townships.
