Birnamwood, WI

Birnamwood sits mostly in Shawano County with a small piece in Marathon County, part of the Wausau metropolitan area and crossed by US 45. The village took shape when the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railroad arrived in 1880, opening a lumber-rich outpost to regular rail traffic. A depot went up that year, a post office followed in 1881, and the village incorporated in 1895. The name comes from Birnam Wood in Shakespeare's Macbeth, after a railroad official connected the burning brush along the new right-of-way with the play's famous forest.

Lumber drove the early economy: the first sawmill opened in 1881, several more followed, and the last of the old mills closed in 1959 before a new sawmill opened in 1977. The school, churches, cemetery, and post office gave Birnamwood a durable center, while farming and outdoor activities continue to shape the surrounding town. The Matsche Community Center, built in 2012 and designed after the former depot, keeps the rail story visible in a modern village building. The oversized fiberglass badger that once stood here is gone, but Birnamwood still has an easy-to-remember name, a real lumber history, and the crossroads feel of northern Wisconsin.
