About Bison
Bison is a town in and the county seat of Perkins County, South Dakota, United States. The 2020 census counted 302 residents. Bison was platted in 1907, and named after the American bison which were once numerous in the area. A post office has been in operation at Bison since 1907. That mix gives Bison a clear local shape within South Dakota, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. Bison is located approximately six miles south of the South Fork of the Grand River and near the headwaters of Thunder Butte Creek. Bison is just south of the Grand River National Grassland.
