Black Forest, CO

Black Forest takes its name from a dense ponderosa-pine landscape on the Palmer Divide rather than from a conventional town center. The historic “Pineries” once referred to a roughly 1,000-square-mile timber region extending across this high ground north and east of Colorado Springs. Today, houses, small subdivisions, ranch properties, meadows, and surviving forest are spread across a 100.6-square-mile census-designated place; 15,097 people lived there at the 2020 census. The 2013 Black Forest Fire remains part of the physical and civic landscape. It burned about 16,000 acres, destroyed 489 homes, and killed two people. Trails now pass through both burned and unburned terrain, and wildfire preparation has become a recurring responsibility rather than an abstract regional concern. Public amenities are correspondingly dispersed. Black Forest Regional Park has a playground, tennis courts, playing field, pavilions, and a network of wider and single-track trails designed for walking, mountain biking, and equestrian use.

Farther north, the 1,070-acre Pineries Open Space opened in 2020 after fire damage delayed public access; its 8.5-mile single-track loop crosses ponderosa woods, grassland, wetlands, and small ponds. A community-built log hall near Black Forest and Shoup roads supplies a different kind of center. Local families erected it from donated trees between 1924 and 1927, and the Black Forest Community Club, chartered in 1929, still uses it for meetings and social events. Fire readiness is woven into present-day community activity as well. Black Forest Fire Rescue offers free property assessments, neighborhood-ambassador training, evacuation resources, fuel-reduction guidance, and community pine-needle disposal events. Living among the trees therefore brings substantial trail and open-space access, but it also makes vegetation management, defensible space, and coordinated emergency planning part of ordinary property care.
