Blackville, SC

Blackville is a Barnwell County town that grew beside the railroad and around Healing Springs. The area sat on older Cherokee Trail and Edisto River routes before the town became a stop on the line between Charleston and Hamburg. Alexander Black, a railroad promoter, gave the place its name, and the tracks helped turn it into a marketing and transportation center. Healing Springs adds a different kind of history: a natural spring with a long tradition of curative stories, a nearby Revolutionary War episode, and the deed that placed the spring's acre in the care of God.

Blackville briefly served as Barnwell County's seat after the Civil War, and the old train depot now houses the public library on Solomon Blatt Avenue. The town's schools include Macedonia Elementary, Blackville-Hilda Junior High and High, and several private or specialized programs. Barnwell Mennonite Church reflects the community's later religious history, while U.S. 78 sends traffic toward Aiken and Bamberg. Blackville has a strong sense of layers: railroad town, spring town, county-seat town, and a present-day place where the library, schools, churches, and Highway 78 keep the old crossroads useful.
