Blairsville, PA

Blairsville is an Indiana County borough on the Conemaugh River, about 42 miles east of Pittsburgh. It was settled in 1818 and incorporated in 1825, after a turnpike route, bridge, and river crossing made the site useful to travelers. The Pennsylvania Main Line Canal reached the area in 1829, and the railroad followed in 1851, bringing shops, foundries, glass, lumber, and other industrial work. The 2020 census counted 3,252 residents. Blairsville’s old map still makes more sense when you picture the river as both highway and hazard.

Before the Civil War, Blairsville was also part of the Underground Railroad, and the town now tells that history through the Blairsville Underground Railroad Museum and History Center, walking tours, and the annual Diamond Days festival. Later, the Conemaugh Dam put parts of town in the floodway, and a highway bypass pulled traffic away from the old downtown. River Valley School District still has Blairsville Elementary and its middle and high school campus nearby in Burrell Township, while the borough’s riverfront, historic buildings, and local organizations keep the place connected to its past. Blairsville is an old transportation town that lost some of its through-traffic role but kept the river, school, and hard-earned history.
