About Bloomfield

Bloomfield, usually called New Bloomfield, is Perry County’s seat, a borough laid out in 1823 among the clover fields of the original town site. The post office has used the New Bloomfield name since 1825, so the two names are still part of the local shorthand. The Perry County Courthouse gives the borough its clearest civic landmark, while the town is surrounded by Centre Township on every side. That makes New Bloomfield a very Pennsylvania kind of county seat: a compact courthouse town in the hills, with its formal name and everyday name both still in circulation.
