Bloomingburg, OH

Bloomingburg is a Fayette County village in south-central Ohio, with 878 residents in the 2020 census. It sits in Paint Township among farm roads and small creeks, with Main Street and the village grid gathering local business, church, and residential life into a compact center. Washington Court House is the county seat to the northwest, while the roads south and east lead into the broader farm country of Fayette County. The village has the feel of a place whose size makes its old street plan easy to read.

Solomon Bowers laid out Bloomingburg in 1815, when the settlement was also known as New Lexington and the New Purchase. Local tradition says the final name came from the many flowers kept in townswomen’s yards. A post office opened in 1819, and Bloomingburg later became known for its place in the Underground Railroad. The courthouse ambitions that shaped the original lots never arrived, but the early public square and Main Street still preserve that first-township pattern.
