Blountsville, AL

Blountsville is a Blount County town in the Blountsville Valley, where U.S. 231 crosses County Highway 26. The town began in 1816 as Bear Meat Cabin, established by Caleb Fryley and Johnny Jones; an 1819 map shows the earlier mixed Creek and Cherokee village of Wassausey. Blountsville’s school history is unusually deep for a place this size: the Academy, Blount College, a district agricultural school, and public schools all had a turn here. The former courthouse that housed Blount College now serves as a museum and visitors’ center. Then there is Spring Valley Beach, including the 360 Rush slide. Blountsville has a little Alabama history in every direction.
