Blue Hill, ME

Blue Hill is the village center of the town of Blue Hill, sitting around the head of Blue Hill Harbor where it opens toward Blue Hill Bay. The CDP counted 943 residents in 2010. Its story begins with settlers arriving in 1762 and finding a place where tides could power mills. A sawmill and grist mill followed on Mill Island, then shipyards, granite quarries, and a short-lived copper boom gave the harbor village several working lives before the modern tourist season arrived.

You can still see those layers in the village center. The Blue Hill Historic District gathers old homes, churches, and commercial buildings around the roads through town, while the harbor shows why ship captains, mill owners, and summer visitors all kept showing up. The town's library and academy add an education thread that reaches back to the early nineteenth century. Blue Hill is technically a CDP inside a larger town, but locals looking at the map would recognize it as the village with the harbor at its front door and the old mill-and-shipbuilding story under its streets.
