Blue Hill, NE

Blue Hill began as Belmont when Solomon B. Rohrer’s townsite was surveyed and platted in September 1878 along the Hastings branch of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. The name changed after another Nebraska town already claimed Belmont. Blue Hill came from the hills around the Blue River, and the first train arrived that December. The town also sat at a crossing with the Nebraska and Colorado Railroad, giving it a strong connection to the movement of settlers, farm products, mail, and supplies across Webster County.

The railroad era shaped the town, but agriculture and local services keep Blue Hill going today. Homes, churches, a school, shops, community organizations, and the Blue Hill Country Club sit among the surrounding fields, while the town’s location near the Kansas line keeps regional ties pointed south as well as north toward Hastings. The Blue River country gives the place its rolling horizon and its name, while the old rail layout shows why the town formed where it did. Blue Hill has the scale of a plains town where people still organize their weeks around school calendars, harvest seasons, local events, and the roads leading to larger towns.
