Blue Mound, IL

Blue Mound occupies a piece of southwestern Macon County where Illinois Route 48 runs through a farm-centered landscape toward Decatur and Taylorville. The village was founded in 1860 and incorporated in 1876, giving it the feel of a place that grew along the nineteenth-century road grid, with no single industrial plant defining its growth. Its name suits the prairie horizon, while the surrounding Blue Mound Township carries the deeper agricultural story: open ground, creek corridors, and scattered early settlement gradually gathered around a local center.

Decatur lies about 14 miles northeast and Taylorville about the same distance southwest, so Blue Mound works as a small link between two larger county-seat communities while retaining its own school and village identity. Meridian Community Unit School District 15 serves the area, with Meridian High School as its secondary campus. The 2020 census counted 1,133 residents, a size that leaves room for familiar routines without separating the village from the wider Macon County farm belt.
