Bluff City, TN

Bluff City is a city in Sullivan County on the banks of Boone Lake, where the Holston River crossing gave the community its earliest shape. The 2020 Census counted 1,822 residents. The city’s history begins with Choates Ford, the crossing used by 400 Virginia militiamen on September 24, 1780, on their way to Sycamore Shoals and Kings Mountain. A pavilion and boardwalk on Boone Lake give that waterfront history a present-day counterpart. The lake remains part of the town’s current map.

Names changed as the town grew: it became Middletown when platted in 1858, then Union, Zollicoffer during the Civil War, Union again, and Bluff City on July 1, 1887. The sequence follows the river crossing, the railroad, and the politics of the era. Bluff City Elementary, Sullivan East Middle, and Sullivan East High School serve the local school route, while neighboring Tri-Cities communities provide higher education options. The result is a river-and-lake city whose compact civic life sits beside a route remembered from the Revolutionary War.
