Bogue Chitto CDP (Lincoln County), MS

Bogue Chitto is an unincorporated census-designated place in Lincoln County, Mississippi, named for the nearby Bogue Chitto River. The name comes from Choctaw words often translated as “big river,” and the waterway gives the community its strongest sense of place. Before the railroad, the settlement may have been known as Atopisaw; when the depot opened, the railroad used Bogue Chitto, and that name became standard by the late nineteenth century. The Illinois Central line still runs through the story, following the older New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern route built in 1857.

Bogue Chitto grew as a practical rural center rather than a separate incorporated town. Lumber, a mill, and a cotton gin supported the local economy, while churches, schools, telephone service, and telegraph service made the place a working community. The Bogue Chitto Academy began in 1897, and the later school site remains part of the Lincoln County School District. The local scoop is that Bogue Chitto is one of Mississippi’s unusual municipal hamlets: it has a formal CDP boundary, a strong river name, and a railroad-shaped history, but its everyday identity still comes from the surrounding roads, timber country, and school community.
