Bohemia is a quiet South Shore hamlet in the Town of Islip where your living experience depends heavily on which pocket you choose. The community has a rich backstory dating back to 1855, when Czech immigrants founded the settlement and initially named it Tabor before honoring their homeland with the name Bohemia. For decades, the local economy thrived on cigar making, with craftspeople rolling cigars in home workshops and factories across town. You can still spot nods to that heritage today, including the historic Jan Hus statue in the local cemetery, the original 1885 wooden chapel at St. John Nepomucene, and artifacts preserved at the Bohemia Historical Society museum on Locust Avenue.
