Expressway access set Bolingbrook's original pattern. Between 1961 and 1965, Dover Construction laid out Westbury, Colonial Village, and King's Park near Route 53 and the newly built Stevenson Expressway. Residents of those subdivisions incorporated the village in 1965. Its founding geography was a group of expressway subdivisions on northern Will County farmland. The population had reached 15,000 by 1972. A brief experiment in large-scale entertainment followed that rapid growth. Old Chicago opened in 1975 with indoor amusement rides and about 200 stores under one roof, then closed in 1980. Its short life still captures the era in which highway access, mass-produced housing, and regional retail created a suburb within a few years.

Interstates 55 and 355 now frame much of Bolingbrook's commercial and industrial geography. Large industrial districts extend along the I-55 and Remington Boulevard area, where warehouses, distribution buildings, manufacturers, and service businesses occupy parcels designed for truck and highway access. Remington Boulevard provides the internal street spine through much of that highway-facing district. Aviation adds a different working landscape. Bolingbrook purchased Clow International Airport in April 2004 and continues to manage the municipal field. Hangars, flight operations, aviation businesses, and public events place a small airport inside a village otherwise structured by expressways and subdivisions.

Bolingbrook's civic center took shape after the first subdivisions. Fountaindale Public Library District formed in 1970, and its current 114,000-square-foot Bolingbrook library opened in 2011 near Briarcliff Road. Studio 300, added in 2013, provides about 7,000 square feet for audio and video production, photography, design, collaboration, and maker projects. Patrons can borrow materials, record audio, edit video, and use meeting or maker space in the same building. Nearby, Village Hall and the Town Center grounds create another public destination. A new pavilion completed during fiscal year 2025 added a permanent setting for community performances and municipal events. The 2026 Jubilee is scheduled there September 11-13, with the Pathways Parade ending at Village Hall on the final afternoon. These institutions give Bolingbrook a recognizable civic area even though its shops and neighborhoods remain distributed along arterial roads and highway interchanges.

The park district grew alongside the village, filling the subdivision map with recreation sites. Two sites illustrate that range. Pelican Harbor combines indoor and outdoor aquatic areas, so lessons and recreation continue across seasons. Hidden Oaks Nature Center, opened in 2009, uses woodland, wetland, and prairie settings for exhibits and environmental programs. Clow Airport supplies a third kind of public outing through the Illinois Aviation Museum, a volunteer organization founded in 2001 that opens its hangar on weekends and uses aircraft restoration for aviation and STEM education. The museum's Cavalcade of Planes brought restored aircraft, displays, and flight demonstrations to the municipal field on June 6 and 7, 2026. Across town, Studio 300, the Town Center pavilion, and parks laid out among the original housing tracts support year-round programs created as the suburb grew.
