Bolingbrook, IL

Bolingbrook grew rapidly starting in the 1960s, expanding from farmland along Route 53 and the newly opened Stevenson Expressway into one of the southwest suburbs' most popular communities. Early housing developments quickly drew young families looking for space and an easy drive into Chicago. By the mid-1970s, the town even made a splash with Old Chicago, a pioneering indoor amusement park and mega-mall that put Bolingbrook on the regional map. While that era of rapid suburban expansion came and went, the village has maintained its reputation as a welcoming, accessible suburb with deep roots and plenty of room to grow.

Convenience remains one of the biggest draws for newcomers today. With direct access to both I-55 and I-355, commuting to downtown Chicago, Oak Brook, or the surrounding suburbs is straightforward. The highway corridors bring a solid local tax base and plenty of jobs in logistics and tech, while open-air shopping centers like The Promenade Bolingbrook offer an easy spot for dinner, errands, and weekend shopping. Right in the middle of town sits Clow International Airport, a friendly municipal airfield where residents can take flying lessons, watch small planes take off, or grab breakfast at the runway cafe.

At the heart of the community is a lively civic center near Briarcliff Road. The Fountaindale Public Library is a major neighborhood hub, featuring Studio 300, a hands-on digital media lab and maker space where residents can record podcasts, edit videos, and tackle creative DIY projects. Next door, the Town Center grounds and outdoor performing pavilion host regular concerts, movie nights, and seasonal gatherings. Every September, families gather here for the annual Bolingbrook Jubilee, bringing food vendors, live music, carnival rides, and the popular Pathways Parade to the center of town.

Outdoor recreation and family activities are easy to find all across the village. The local park district runs Pelican Harbor, a popular water park with both indoor pools and outdoor splash zones that keep kids busy all year. If you prefer quieter trails, the Hidden Oaks Nature Center offers wooded paths, hands-on environmental exhibits, and peaceful spots along the DuPage River corridor. Aviation buffs can spend weekend mornings at the Illinois Aviation Museum, checking out vintage aircraft in the hangar or catching the annual Cavalcade of Planes airshow. It all adds up to a comfortable, well-rounded suburb with activities for every season.
