Bolton, NC

Bolton sits in eastern Columbus County along U.S. Routes 74 and 76, a timber-and-rail town about halfway between Whiteville and Wilmington. The town was established in 1899 and named for the Bolton Lumber Company; incorporation followed in 1915. That name captures the original business of the place: forests, mills, rail connections, and the movement of lumber through southeastern North Carolina. Today the divided highway bypasses the center, but it keeps Bolton connected to the same regional corridor.

Bolton's civic story has a few layers that do not fit neatly on a road sign. The town's 1977 charter sets a mayor and five-member board of aldermen, while the local cemetery committee, town meetings, and the Bolton Bloom Market keep the center active. The Colcor investigation also passed through town in 1981, when undercover FBI agents used a supposed bar opening to investigate election fraud in Columbus County. Bolton is a small town with a timber past, a highway future, and a civic memory that includes both ordinary gatherings and one very strange chapter in state political history.
