Bon Secour, AL

Set along the quiet waters of Bon Secour Bay in southern Baldwin County, Bon Secour is a historic fishing community with a relaxed, small-town atmosphere. Its name translates from French as "safe harbor," which fits the town well. Working shrimp boats, fresh seafood markets along the river, and moss-draped oaks give the area a timeless coastal feel. You get plenty of peace and quiet at home, yet the shops, restaurants, and medical centers of Foley and Gulf Shores are only a ten-minute drive down the road.

Students in the area attend Baldwin County Public Schools in neighboring Foley. For time outside, the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge sits right next door, offering miles of hiking trails, peaceful beaches, and great birdwatching through coastal dunes and pine flatwoods. Like most low-lying Gulf Coast communities, residents do have to plan for heavy summer rains, heat, and seasonal tropical storms. Overall, Bon Secour is a wonderful fit for anyone who wants authentic coastal living close to modern conveniences.
