Bonanza, AR

Bonanza is a small, quiet community in Sebastian County, sitting right along the Arkansas-Oklahoma border about twelve miles south of Fort Smith. With around 600 residents, it offers a peaceful, rural atmosphere for anyone wanting more space and a slower pace while keeping an easy drive into the city for work or errands. The town started out in the 1890s as a coal mining settlement, growing quickly around local mines and a railway line that shipped coal across the region.

That early mining era brought plenty of hardship, including racial violence in 1904 that forced out Black workers, followed by mine closures that shrank the town for decades. Bonanza eventually reincorporated in 1973 and gradually found its footing as a relaxed residential pocket. Today, local kids attend nearby Hackett schools, and neighbors enjoy the calm of open country roads alongside the convenience of nearby Fort Smith amenities.
